XChat encrypted messaging app interface showing secure chats and media sharing features

X (formerly Twitter) Launches XChat: New Encrypted Messaging App vs WhatsApp (2026)

By VFuture Media Tech Staff Published: April 26, 2026

X (formerly Twitter) has officially launched XChat, a dedicated standalone messaging app designed to compete directly with WhatsApp, Signal, and iMessage. The app became available on the Apple App Store on April 24, 2026, marking a significant evolution in X’s communication strategy.

What is XChat?

XChat is a privacy-focused messaging application that allows users to chat with their existing X contacts without needing phone numbers or new invites. It spins out the enhanced direct messaging features from the main X app into a clean, dedicated experience.

Key Features at Launch:

  • End-to-End Encryption: Every message uses unique key pairs protected by a device PIN. X claims it cannot access conversations.
  • Messaging & Media: Text, images, voice messages, file sharing, and disappearing messages.
  • Calls: High-quality audio and video calling.
  • Group Chats: Support for group conversations.
  • Extra Privacy Tools: Message editing/deletion for everyone, screenshot blocking.
  • No Ads or Tracking: Ad-free experience with sign-in via existing X account.

The app is currently iOS-only (iPhone and iPad). An Android version has not yet been announced.

Why X Split Messaging into a Separate App

This launch represents a strategic shift from Elon Musk’s original “everything app” vision (modeled after WeChat). Instead of keeping everything inside one super app, X is creating specialized, focused experiences. DMs remain available in the main X app for now, but XChat offers a more streamlined and private alternative.

How XChat Compares to WhatsApp

Feature Comparison: Signal vs. WhatsApp

  • Sign-up Requirements: Signal requires only a phone number, whereas WhatsApp requires a phone number and an X account.
  • Encryption: Both platforms utilize end-to-end encryption.
  • Ads & Tracking: Signal has no ads or tracking, while WhatsApp collects metadata.
  • File Sharing: Signal allows any file type to be shared, but WhatsApp is limited.
  • Calls: Both services support audio and video calls.
  • Screenshot Blocking: Signal features screenshot blocking, which is not available on WhatsApp.

XChat’s biggest advantage: No phone number required and stronger privacy claims. WhatsApp benefits from massive global adoption and maturity.

Early Reactions

User feedback has been mixed. Many praise the clean interface and privacy focus, while some question the need for yet another app. Early testers note it feels like a direct extraction of X’s upgraded chat system.

What’s Next?

  • Android rollout (expected soon)
  • Potential deeper Grok AI integration
  • Payments and other “everything app” features in future updates

This launch strengthens X’s position in the crowded messaging space and advances Elon Musk’s long-term goal of building secure, private communication tools.

Download XChat now on the App Store and test it with your X network.
